PACIFIC PALISADES – As residents of Pacific Palisades embark on their journey to rebuild after the devastating fire that destroyed nearly 7,000 homes one year ago, the experiences of three longtime residents—Kimberly Bloom, David Howard, and Erika Fiksdal—exemplify the varied paths individuals are taking within this close-knit community.
Kimberly Bloom expressed her struggles with the insurance process, revealing that her company offered her merely 50% of what it would cost to reconstruct her home. “It was a ridiculous amount of money,” Bloom stated, emphasizing the challenges she faces in navigating the complexities of insurance negotiations. Despite the hurdles, she remains determined to rebuild, although she and her husband have yet to engage an architect or builder, constrained by the sluggish response from their insurance provider.
Conversely, David Howard holds a more optimistic perspective, believing he will receive 100% of his insurance compensation. “We’re rebuilding the house that we’ve always wanted,” he remarked, adding that if there is any silver lining in this tragedy, it is the opportunity to create their dream home. Howard, like Bloom, reflects on the emotional toll of the disaster, recalling cherished family moments before the fire ravaged their community.
Erika Fiksdal’s journey is marked by the deep roots her family has in Palisades, as her mother lived in the house where Fiksdal currently resides since 1978. Facing the realities of being underinsured for her property, she acknowledges the unpredictability of the rebuilding process. “We plan to rebuild, we just don’t know how,” she explained, highlighting the uncertainty that many families in the area are grappling with.
The emotions surrounding the rebuilding effort are palpable as residents recall the chaos of the evacuation and the loss of cherished memories. “When was the last time I got to walk through my front door? It just feels surreal,” Howard lamented, underscoring the longing many feel to return to normalcy.
Despite the challenges, there is a strong sense of resilience within the community. Bloom declared, “We will come back. It’s gonna take all of our blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen.” The sentiment shared by Howard reflects the unwavering spirit of the residents: “It’s a very special place, and nobody that lived here ever took it for granted.”
As Pacific Palisades residents continue on their paths toward recovery, their diverse experiences highlight the strength and determination inherent in this community, serving as a beacon of hope amid the aftermath of tragedy.
