Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh highlighted the pressing challenges facing the region, including climate change, economic shocks, and the rapid evolution of technology, which pose significant threats to livelihoods. He underscored the urgency for collaborative action among Pacific nations.
During the conference, Singh detailed Fiji’s proactive approach to fostering regional cooperation, including the proposal of bilateral partnerships with three Pacific Island nations. These partnerships are designed to provide essential technical assistance in key areas such as labor standards, occupational health and safety, workers’ compensation, mediation, and productivity enhancement. This initiative not only underscores Fiji’s leadership role but also reflects a broader commitment among Pacific nations to establish fair, secure, and resilient employment conditions.
The conference also saw the endorsement of an annual Labour Ministers Meeting and the establishment of a Pacific Senior Labour Officials Forum.
