Acting President and Chief Justice Salesi Temo addressed the Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions, urging delegates to embrace their roles as fearless advocates for human rights in the face of pressing global challenges. During the opening session of the forum, he stressed the critical need to fortify national human rights institutions, ensuring their independence and efficacy in safeguarding rights.
Justice Temo pointed out that only strong institutions grounded in principles can adequately defend the rights of vulnerable populations. He emphasized the urgent issue of climate change, declaring it a defining challenge of our time, particularly for Pacific communities where its effects are not merely theoretical but present immediate existential threats.
The conference aims to amplify diverse voices from civil society and regional experts, forging a collective path towards empowering individuals and communities to assert their rights. Temo recognized the theme, “Shared Journeys Across the Asia Pacific: Advancing Human Rights,” emphasizing the shared struggles and commitments within the region.
Highlighting the severe repercussions of climate change, he noted that 676 communities in Fiji could be forced to relocate as a result of rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Justice Temo stressed that it is imperative to transform global commitments into actionable local strategies, which require resilience, inclusivity, and justice to thrive.
He underscored the vital connection between a healthy environment and the fulfillment of human rights, particularly the right to life. He called for increased protection of environmental defenders, who often face personal risks while advocating for these crucial issues.
