The Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) has made a powerful statement on World Human Rights Day, advocating for the universal application of human rights, inclusive of LGBTQI+ individuals. Interim CEO Loata Tucika highlighted the critical need to protect these rights to create a safer and more inclusive Pacific region.

Tucika addressed the persistent challenges faced by LGBTQI+ communities, such as violence, harassment, and systemic discrimination. She called on both governments and communities to prioritize the safety and dignity of everyone, irrespective of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

In her message, Tucika emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts and spotlighted PSGDN’s partnerships with organizations like ILGA Oceania and DIVA for Equality, all supported by the DFAT-funded Equality Collaboration. These alliances strive to advance the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals across the Pacific.

While acknowledging the significance of cultural and religious beliefs, Tucika insisted that LGBTQI+ individuals must be free from violence and discrimination. She called upon states to take responsibility for protecting all people from harm and to ensure accountability for acts of violence and harassment.

Additionally, Tucika advocated for stronger measures to combat discrimination and to address violent acts motivated by bias. She stressed the need for a thorough review of existing laws and policies to prevent the unjust criminalization of individuals based on their gender identity or expression. Tucika also urged nations to adhere to international human rights standards while crafting culturally sensitive approaches to enhance protection and inclusion.

Through these collective efforts, there is optimism for establishing a more equitable society where all individuals can enjoy their rights without fear of persecution. Such initiatives hold the potential to foster a climate of respect and acceptance, ultimately leading to a more harmonious coexistence in the region.
