The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has publicly denounced a series of social media posts that he describes as offensive, defamatory, and derogatory towards two women Members of Parliament. In a statement released today, Seruiratu expressed his concern over the use of inappropriate language and baseless allegations circulated by an individual online, labeling the posts as deeply troubling and irresponsible.
Seruiratu emphasized that accusations of criminal behavior and attacks on personal integrity, particularly when unfounded, are not only damaging but also potentially illegal. He made it clear that he and the Parliamentary Opposition Chambers do not support or condone any form of defamatory commentary or gender-based abuse directed at any Member of Parliament, irrespective of their political background.
Highlighting the challenges faced by women in public office, Seruiratu noted that they often endure disproportionate scrutiny and harassment, especially on social media platforms. He asserted that such attacks diminish not only the targeted individuals but also threaten the integrity of public institutions and hinder efforts to promote women’s involvement in leadership roles.
The Opposition Leader has urged the individual behind the posts to promptly retract them, offer a public apology, and cease any further defamatory remarks. While reaffirming the importance of freedom of expression, he stressed that this freedom should always be exercised with a sense of responsibility. Constructive criticism should never devolve into personal attacks, defamation, or the dissemination of harmful misinformation.
Seruiratu also called upon the public to engage in respectful discourse, allowing law enforcement agencies to conduct their investigations without any external interference or prejudice. He reiterated the Opposition’s commitment to cultivating a political climate founded on mutual respect, accountability, and the rule of law, highlighting the importance of fostering a safe environment for all individuals in public service.
