Sailosi Lakovi and Sekove Tawake, who are facing charges related to an attempted robbery in the Tacirua New Subdivision on December 20 of last year, were remanded further by the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

Both men are charged with one count of attempted robbery, as well as resisting arrest and refusing to provide fingerprints. During the court proceedings, Lakovi expressed concerns about a rumor he heard regarding the potential explosion of an oil tank at Walu Bay, which he feared could result in the evacuation of the remand center.

The Magistrate responded by stating that the Fiji Corrections Service would notify the court of any developments regarding such an incident, clarifying that the court’s authority is limited to the matters concerning the accused while they remain in custody.

The prosecution was given seven days to submit its response regarding bail, and both Lakovi and Tawake have been instructed to provide two sureties each. The case has been adjourned, with a bail hearing scheduled for January 22.

This situation highlights the ongoing concerns within the judicial system and custodial facilities, especially regarding the safety and conditions faced by those in remand.
