Ohio University has terminated head football coach Brian Smith for cause, following an administrative review that uncovered “serious professional misconduct” that did not align with the standards expected at the institution. The announcement was made on Wednesday, marking a significant shift for the football program.

At 45 years old, Smith was nearing the end of his first full season as head coach after taking over the role on an interim basis last season when Tim Albin left the program. Under his leadership, the Bobcats demonstrated impressive performance, finishing the season with an 8-4 record and securing a spot in the upcoming bowl game against UNLV on December 23. However, this opportunity will not be under Smith’s leadership, as he was placed on indefinite leave on December 1 without specific reasons disclosed by the university.

In the wake of his departure, the university has appointed defensive coordinator John Hauser as the interim head coach. Ohio University has announced that the process to find a new permanent head coach will commence immediately.

Smith’s coaching journey prior to his role at Ohio University included various assistant and coordinator positions throughout college football. He notably had three stints at Hawaii, where he honed his skills as an offensive coordinator and coach before stepping into his first head-coaching role.

The situation presents a challenge for Ohio University, but it also opens the door for new leadership and potential revitalization of the football program moving forward.
