More than three months after the resignation of former Northwestern President Michael Schill, the University has officially commenced its search for its 18th president. Peter Barris, Chair of the Board of Trustees, conveyed this announcement in a message to the University community on Wednesday.
The Presidential Search Committee will be led by Vice Chair of the Board Steve Cahillane and will comprise a diverse group of stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, alumni, and trustees. This committee aims to gather input from the University community, establish a formal presidential position profile, and evaluate potential candidates for the role.
Barris expressed confidence in the committee, stating that its members will contribute essential perspectives necessary to identify a president who embodies Northwestern’s core values, supports its academic and research initiatives, and aligns with the institution’s tradition of excellence.
To assist in the process, the committee will partner with Spencer Stuart, a prominent global leadership advisory firm specializing in executive recruitment and leadership strategies. This collaboration is expected to enhance the search for suitable leadership talent.
Barris also encouraged community participation in the selection process, inviting members of the NU community to share their thoughts and nominate candidates through an input survey available on a dedicated web page. The survey prompts participants to reflect on what makes Northwestern unique, the challenges and opportunities facing the next president, and the desired qualities in a new leader.
Following the winter break, Barris indicated that further opportunities for community engagement will be provided, including listening sessions with search committee members, where community insights can directly influence the search for Northwestern’s next leader.
In appreciation for the interim leadership during this transitional period, Barris acknowledged interim President Henry Bienen, who has indicated plans to step down by late spring. The search process will continue to evolve, with additional updates expected in early January.
This proactive approach to leadership selection reflects Northwestern’s commitment to ensuring that its next president will be well-equipped to guide the University into its next chapter.
