Northwestern Faces Wisconsin in Big Ten Opener After Tough Stretch

After a challenging 86-81 defeat to Oklahoma State on Thanksgiving Day, Northwestern Wildcats coach Chris Collins and his team are looking to regroup before their Big Ten conference opener against Wisconsin in Madison. With a current record of 5-2, the Wildcats have had nearly a week to reflect on their performance and prepare for the competitive scene ahead.

The upcoming match against Wisconsin marks the first of two Big Ten games this month, with the second being their home opener against Ohio State. Collins acknowledged the tough slate of games his team has faced, which included travels to play a Big East team, an ACC team, and a Big 12 team, albeit many close to home. “A lot of close games, lots of things to learn from,” Collins stated. While his reflections hint at missed opportunities—specifically a desire to emerge from that stretch with a perfect record—he recognized the season thus far as a valuable learning experience for his players.

Northwestern’s current record is reminiscent of past seasons. In 2022, they started 5-2 with losses against Auburn and Pittsburgh, and in the previous year, they faced similar early setbacks but managed to regain momentum effectively. The Wildcats aim to build on this trend as they enter a crucial phase of the season.

The Wisconsin Badgers, standing at 5-2 as well, will provide a stiff test for Northwestern. They have endured significant defeats, including a substantial loss to No. 9 BYU but boast a dynamic backcourt with Nick Boyd and John Blackwell, both averaging 40 points combined per game. Compounding their challenge is the expected raucous atmosphere at Kohl Center—a venue known for its intense fan engagement.

Collins emphasized the importance of maintaining composure amid the ups and downs of the season. “You have to keep an even keel,” he advised. With a sense of urgency to start strong in the conference, the Wildcats have a critical opportunity to secure a valuable road win against formidable opponents.

As they prepare, Northwestern aims to address some pressing issues, specifically fouling and rebounding, which have hindered their performance in recent games. Conceding many offensive rebounds has proved problematic, even in victories like their narrow escape against DePaul. Collins noted, “If we can clean up those two areas in particular, it will make us a better team.”

Star forward Nick Martinelli remains optimistic, asserting the team’s potential while encouraging discipline and focus. He underscored the importance of strong leadership and commitment, illustrating the team’s closer connections during challenging times. “When you’re on the court at Wisconsin… are we going to break apart or come together?” he affirmed, hoping their hard work in practice translates into performance on the road.

As the Wildcats look to bounce back and solidify their place in the conference, they carry a mix of hope and determination that the lessons learned will pave the way for future success.
