Tourism in Fiji’s Northern Division is experiencing significant challenges due to limited airlift options and inadequate airport facilities, particularly evident in Vanua Levu. Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has emphasized that the lack of larger runways presents a considerable barrier for hotels and community-based tourism operators who are striving to attract visitors to the area.
Despite these challenges, Gavoka remains hopeful about the prospects offered by the NaVualiku Tourism Development Project. He is optimistic that this initiative will increase the Northern Division’s share of national tourist arrivals, which currently stands at only four percent. “That is the main challenge here in the North. Our current plan is to upgrade facilities to cater for ATR-72 aircraft in Matei, Savusavu, and Labasa. If we can achieve this in the coming years, the North will see a surge in tourism arrivals,” he stated.
Additionally, Gavoka revealed that the Vunilagi site is being evaluated for a future airport that would serve Savusavu and facilitate larger aircraft. This development could significantly enhance the tourism potential of the area. He confirmed that there would be further infrastructure advancements linked to the NaVualiku Tourism Project over the next eight years, aiming to improve connectivity and boost tourism capacity throughout the Northern Division.
These developments not only signify a commitment to enhancing tourism in Fiji’s Northern Division, but they also promise to revitalize local economies and improve the area’s appeal as a desirable travel destination. The optimism surrounding these projects highlights a bright future for tourism in this picturesque region, with benefits likely extending to both the local communities and the broader national economy.
