A shortage of personnel and essential resources is currently affecting health services in Northern Fiji. During a recent visit to various health facilities, including the Dreketi and Lekutu health centers and Nabouwalu Hospital, Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa recognized the significant challenges faced by frontline health workers in these areas.

Mr. Ravunawa highlighted that staff members expressed serious concerns over the lack of human resources, inadequate medication and supply levels, limited transportation options, insufficient accommodation for staff, and general difficulties in service delivery. He stressed the urgent need for enhanced planning at the health centers to effectively address these pressing issues.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to improving primary healthcare, the Assistant Minister assured health workers that their dedication is critical for ensuring all Fijians have access to quality medical services. “I sincerely thank the team for your tireless service in 2025. Your dedication continues to save lives and strengthen our health system,” he stated.

This visit illustrates the government’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gaps in the healthcare system, especially in more remote areas of the nation. By tackling these significant shortages, there is a hopeful outlook for the enhancement and sustainability of healthcare services, ultimately benefiting the well-being of all citizens.
