North Carolina freshman has been named one of the 15 players on the national ballot for the prestigious 2026 John Wooden Award, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Saturday morning. This recognition is a significant achievement as the Wooden Award honors the most outstanding college basketball player in the nation, with candidates evaluated for their performances both on and off the court.

The national ballot features a diverse group of athletes, including two graduate students, two seniors, two juniors, three sophomores (one of whom is a redshirt sophomore), and six freshmen, representing 14 different universities. Notably, Texas Tech stands out with multiple players included in the ballot.

In addition to the North Carolina standout, the ballot comprises players such as Darius Acuff Jr. (Arkansas), Christian Anderson (Texas Tech), Cameron Boozer (Duke), AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Jeremy Fears (Michigan State), Kingston Flemings (Houston), Thomas Haugh (Florida), Graham Ike (Gonzaga), Joshua Jefferson (Iowa State), Yaxel Lendeborg (Michigan), Labaron Philon Jr. (Alabama), Braden Smith (Purdue), JT Toppin (Texas Tech), and Keaton Wagler (Illinois).

Candidates for the Wooden Award must meet several rigorous criteria set forth by Coach Wooden when the award was established. These include being full-time students at accredited NCAA institutions, maintaining a grade point average of at least 2.00, significantly contributing to their team’s success, excelling in both offensive and defensive play, and demonstrating strong character both on and off the court.

Voting for the Wooden Award All-America Team will commence on March 16 at 6 p.m. ET and will conclude on March 28 at 11:59 p.m. ET. During this period, voters will assess each athlete’s complete performance over the season, including the NCAA Tournament’s opening rounds.

The announcement of the Wooden Award men’s and women’s All-America Teams and the top five finalists for the Wooden Award Trophy will take place on April 4 during the Men’s Final Four on ESPN. This event will heighten the anticipation surrounding the award, culminating on April 10, 2026, at the Los Angeles Athletic Club when the winners will be revealed live at 9 p.m. EST on ESPNU. The evening will also honor the 2026 Legends of Coaching Award recipient, Matt Painter of Purdue, as part of a historic celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the award, spotlighting excellence in college basketball.
