Universal Pictures has unveiled the first teaser for “The Odyssey,” the eagerly awaited adaptation by Christopher Nolan of Homer’s timeless epic. The film chronicles the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, as he embarks on a perilous journey back home following the Trojan War. A first-look image featuring Damon in character was shared by the studio back in February, igniting excitement among fans.
In this star-studded cast, Damon is joined by acclaimed actors including Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. Nolan not only directs the film but also serves as the screenwriter and producer, working alongside his wife, Emma Thomas.
The teaser hints at a dramatic narrative, showcasing Odysseus facing shipwrecks, navigating treacherous seas, and encountering formidable beasts. The visuals further include scenes of Odysseus and his soldiers inside the legendary Trojan horse, a moment previously featured in a six-minute preview showcased at select IMAX 70mm screenings for other films. The trailer also offers glimpses of Tom Holland as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, his devoted wife.
Universal announced last December that “The Odyssey” would feature groundbreaking IMAX film technology, enhancing the cinematic experience. Jim Orr, a Universal executive, described the film at CinemaCon as “a visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would quite likely be proud of.”
John Leguizamo, another cast member, praised Nolan’s unique approach to filmmaking, likening his work ethic to that of an independent filmmaker—creating art with freedom and without constraints from studio demands. Leguizamo remarked, “He’s like an indie filmmaker but with crazy money.”
This project follows Nolan’s recent success with “Oppenheimer,” which received seven Academy Awards in 2024. The director shared in 2023 that he aims to completely own his projects, transforming initial ideas into unique creations that reflect his vision.
“The Odyssey” is set to hit theaters on July 17, promising to be a remarkable narrative steeped in artistry and creativity, likely to captivate audiences worldwide.
