No. 3 UConn Seeks to Extend Historic Home Win Streak Against Columbia

No. 3 UConn is aiming to maintain its impressive start to the season when it takes on Columbia on Monday night in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies, currently 2-0, are seeking their 36th consecutive nonconference home win, extending a remarkable run that includes a commanding 110-47 victory over UMass Lowell last Friday.

In that match, UConn came out strong, initiating the game with a devastating 44-3 run. Tarris Reed Jr., returning from a hamstring injury, made a significant impact in his season debut, scoring 20 points while grabbing 12 rebounds and recording four blocks. The Huskies demonstrated their offensive prowess by shooting 60.9% from the field and suffocating the River Hawks defensively, limiting them to just 21.3% shooting. Head coach Dan Hurley praised his team for their aggressive performance, highlighting the importance of setting a defensive tone after their less-than-stellar opening game.

“It’s one of the deepest teams I’ve ever had,” Hurley remarked, indicating the squad’s potential despite facing injuries to freshmen Braylon Mullins and Jacob Furphy. Several players have stepped up, with five Huskies averaging at least 10 points in the early season.

Columbia, who enters the game with a 1-0 record, shares a common opponent with UConn, having secured a 71-53 victory over New Haven in their opening game. Under new head coach Kevin Hovde, the Lions showcased their dominance with a robust performance, led by Kenny Noland’s 14 points, while freshman Miles Franklin and senior Avery Brown contributed 13 and 10 points respectively. Hovde emphasized the importance of solid defense and rebounding as key focal points for his team moving forward.

With both teams demonstrating depth and talent early in the season, tonight’s matchup promises to be an exciting contest as UConn aims to extend its home winning streak.
