A man has been sentenced to nine months in prison for his involvement in burglary, theft, and resisting arrest after he pleaded guilty to all charges. High Court Judge Justice Lee Burney disclosed that Ratu Osea Verekawa broke into Katalaina Kuilamu’s residence, stealing a 55-inch television and other valuable items totaling over $1,500. Fortunately, the police were able to recover the stolen television.
The incident escalated when police attempted to apprehend Verekawa at his home on September 6. He tried to escape and even assaulted an officer during the struggle. Justice Burney strongly criticized this behavior, stating that such acts compromise the safety of law enforcement and must be met with suitable consequences. Initially, the court imposed a 12-month sentence for the burglary and theft charges; however, this was adjusted to five months in light of Verekawa’s early guilty plea and the time he had already spent in pre-sentencing detention. Additionally, a four-month sentence was added for his actions in resisting arrest, demonstrating the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of law enforcement.
Judge Burney underscored that the sentence would not be suspended, highlighting the importance of protecting public safety. Verekawa has a 30-day window to appeal the ruling, revealing his options moving forward.
