A Newport News resident has hit the jackpot, winning $100,000 from a Virginia Lottery scratch-off ticket that his wife purchased during a shopping trip. Matthew Stevenson shared that his wife, a regular lottery player, bought several tickets for them to enjoy scratching together at home.
The lucky ticket, a Gold Hard Cash scratch-off, unveiled the game’s top prize. It was bought at the Stop & Go store located on Warwick Boulevard in Newport News.
Despite the significant win, Stevenson remarked that he has no immediate plans for the prize money. The Gold Hard Cash game, which includes a range of prizes from $10 to $150,000, continues to offer excitement for players, with two more top prizes of $150,000 still available. Notably, this was the first time a player has claimed the top prize in this particular scratch-off game. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,060,800, while the overall odds of winning anything in the game stand at 1 in 4.76.
The Virginia Lottery not only brings joy to players like Stevenson but also supports public education throughout the state. Last fiscal year, Newport News received over $38 million from lottery profits dedicated to K-12 education, contributing to the more than $901 million collected statewide for schools.
This win reflects not only the chance for individual excitement but also highlights the broader positive impact that the lottery can have on community resources, particularly in education.
