New Zealand is set to broaden its evacuation efforts from the Middle East to assist Pacific Island nationals stranded due to the ongoing conflicts in the region. Foreign Minister Winston Peters made this announcement during his visit to Uruguay, confirming the pre-deployment of two C-130J aircraft from the New Zealand Defence Force to prepare for rapid response measures.

Peters acknowledged the past support requests from member nations of the Pacific Islands Forum during crises, referencing a previous emergency involving the evacuation of 370 individuals, including 145 foreign nationals, during the New Caledonian crisis. While no Pacific nations have formally requested assistance yet, Peters noted that New Zealand’s support could extend beyond its own citizens.

The urgency of the current situation is underscored by increasing violence in the Middle East, resulting in airspace closures and the suspension of most commercial flights. In the past 24 hours, the number of New Zealanders registered with SafeTravel has sharply increased from 2,400 to 3,000, and Peters anticipates further rises in this figure.

The deployment of the C-130J aircraft aims to ensure a prompt response should circumstances allow for evacuations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is actively coordinating a 24/7 response operation, with personnel already in the region to monitor developments closely.

Currently, the New Zealand government urges its citizens in the affected areas to shelter in place as evacuation options are limited by the ongoing airspace restrictions. The operational strategy involves moving individuals from high-risk areas to safer locations rather than immediate repatriation to New Zealand.

Peters expressed confidence in the efforts of all teams involved, stating, “Our team is working on defense and foreign affairs around the club, using all their experience to ensure that they can intervene to help them in the most safe way possible. So, hang on, help is on its way.” This statement underscores New Zealand’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens and Pacific Island nationals who are facing dangerous situations during this volatile period.
