Members of the Korovalewa Cooperative Ltd in Nasama Village, Nadroga, recently celebrated the arrival of a new tractor, which is set to enhance their farming operations significantly. The cooperative, comprised of 18 dedicated members, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Ministry of Agriculture’s support through its farm mechanization program.
Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized that this initiative underscores the government’s dedication to helping rural farmers transition to commercial agriculture. He noted, “Mechanization is a critical enabler of agricultural growth.” By providing support to cooperatives such as Korovalewa, the government aims to empower farmers by enabling them to save time, lower operational costs, and improve farming efficiencies.
With a wealth of experience ranging from 10 to 40 years among its members, the Korovalewa Cooperative has been active for two years, overseeing 55 acres of land, including 30 acres suitable for cultivation. Minister Tunabuna also commended the cooperative for embracing young farmers, viewing their involvement as a promising sign for the future of agriculture in Fiji. He stated, “It is encouraging to see young people actively involved in farming. The youths are our future — their participation ensures the continuity of agriculture as a sustainable livelihood.”
Cooperative president Iliesa Hanimo remarked on the acquisition of the tractor as a pivotal moment for the group, reflecting their development since establishing the cooperative. This advancement not only serves as a beacon of hope for the cooperative but also has positive implications for the wider farming community in the region. The investment in modern farming tools is anticipated to boost productivity and promote more efficient agricultural practices, thus fostering sustainability and growth within Fiji’s agricultural sector. This positive development exemplifies a commitment to advancing agricultural practices and supporting future generations of farmers.
