Acting President and Chief Justice Salesi Temo recently welcomed a new cohort of lawyers into the legal profession during an admission ceremony. He emphasized that the most significant challenges they may face in their careers might not just arise in the courtroom, but also from the ever-present pressures of social media.
In his address, Justice Temo highlighted the need for resilience, discipline, and courage — qualities that are essential to withstand the increasing scrutiny that legal practitioners often encounter online. “These days social media can be very destructive. You are supposed to rise above it and fight for your place, irrespective of the negativity you receive,” he advised the new lawyers, reminding them of the heavy responsibility that comes with their privilege of being attorneys.
He underscored the role of lawyers as protectors of citizens’ rights and the importance of upholding the rule of law. Temo urged the graduates to stay firm in adherence to the Code of Ethics, which serves as their guiding framework and vital anchor in a profession where public perception can rapidly shift.
