New Hampshire Farm Holds Line on Thanksgiving Turkey Prices as Nationwide Surge

With Thanksgiving approaching, turkey prices nationwide have surged, posing challenges for consumers. However, some farmers in New Hampshire, notably Hurd Farm in Hampton, are managing to keep their prices stable. Steve Hurd, the farm’s owner and a third-generation farmer, shared insights into the dynamics of turkey farming and the importance of the Thanksgiving holiday for his business.

Hurd emphasized that turkeys primarily sell for Thanksgiving, which constitutes a significant portion of his annual income. Despite the overall increase in wholesale turkey prices, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports have jumped 40% due to bird flu outbreaks and rising expenses for crops and labor, Hurd Farm has not increased its prices. Hurd proudly noted that health and quality have remained priorities, and he has successfully avoided the effects of bird flu that have hit many farms.

While his farm’s turkeys are priced at approximately $6.99 a pound—higher than typical grocery store prices—Hurd reassured customers that they are purchasing quality product sourced directly from local farms. He has also maintained stable costs by managing the prices of his supplies efficiently.

As a result, Hurd Farm is almost sold out of turkeys for Thanksgiving, although a limited number are still available for those interested. Hurd’s commitment to his community and the quality of his products reflects a positive approach to navigating the challenges faced by many farmers this season. This year’s efforts not only secure his livelihood but also enable customers to support local agriculture during the holiday season.
