For many years, families in Lamiti and Malawai on Gau Island have faced significant challenges as their children navigated dangerous waters in small boats to attend school, risking their safety due to changing tides and unpredictable weather. Recently, however, a transformative change occurred with the presentation of a new fibreglass boat equipped with a 40HP engine to the Lamiti Malawai Primary School. The donation, valued at $24,000, was made official during a handover ceremony with Education Minister Aseri Radrodro.
This new vessel symbolizes not just enhanced transportation but also a commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of students, emphasizing the importance of education. Teachers have highlighted how adverse weather conditions have negatively affected school attendance, with many students missing classes due to unsafe travel conditions.
