Nets open season with historic rookie start, hinting at a new era

The anticipation that NBA fans feel between seasons can often stretch much longer than the actual offseason. For the Brooklyn Nets, this anticipation culminated in an exciting yet challenging opener for the 2025-26 season. Having committed to a rebuilding strategy two summers ago, the Nets faced a long wait before they could begin to utilize their new assets. This season marks a fresh start, accompanied by the hope of future success.

In their opening game against the Charlotte Hornets, the Nets were unable to field all their rookies as Danny Wolf sat out due to a left ankle sprain. However, Ben Saraf, the first player drafted at No. 26, made history by starting the game, the first rookie to do so for the franchise since Vonteego Cummings in the late ’90s. Brooklyn’s lineup also featured Cam Thomas, Terance Mann, Michael Porter Jr., and Nic Claxton, setting the stage for a competitive match.

The Nets began the game with a flurry, scoring 32 points in the first quarter, which broke expectations for offensive output. Michael Porter Jr. made an early impact, adding eight points to the tally. However, despite the high score, the Nets struggled to execute their offense effectively, leading to multiple turnovers and reliance on free throws. Their defensive efforts were particularly lacking, allowing 38 points to the Hornets in the first quarter and surrendering a staggering 39 points in the second quarter, resulting in a 77-60 halftime deficit.

Although the game was not going according to plan, Brooklyn showed flashes of potential through players like Tyrese Martin and Jalen Wilson, who contributed significantly despite the scoreboard. The Nets managed to cut down Charlotte’s lead to 13 points in the fourth quarter, but the Hornets quickly responded with a scoring run to secure their victory.

Leading the charge for Brooklyn was Nic Claxton, who scored 17 points, along with Day’Ron Sharpe, who added 14 points, demonstrating the team’s depth. Egor Dëmin also shined in his debut with 14 points, showcasing his ability to be a valuable asset moving forward. Yet, prominent scorers Cam Thomas and Michael Porter Jr. struggled, leaving room for improvement as they aim to elevate their performance throughout the season.

Head coach Jordi Fernández reflected on the night’s events, noting the importance of each player’s contribution, even when faced with challenges, emphasizing the need to continue fighting regardless of individual performances. He echoed a vital lesson for the season: it’s about growth and development rather than perfection.

Despite the disappointment felt from the match’s outcome, the debut of four rookies was historic for the Nets, marking only the fourth occasion in franchise history where multiple rookies debuted in the same game. Furthermore, Saraf’s starting role highlights a promising future.

Looking ahead, the Nets will open their home schedule against the Cleveland Cavaliers, where they hope to bounce back and deliver a strong performance. This game promises to be filled with excitement, including a halftime show from Brooklyn-native Kota the Friend and engaging activities for fans. The season is still fresh, and the Nets aim to harness the lessons learned from their opener as they continue their journey toward competitive basketball.
