Nestlé has expanded the recall of nearly 80 batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula products due to concerns over the potential presence of the toxin cereulide. This toxin, which can lead to nausea and vomiting, is produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus and can be particularly concerning as it is extremely heat resistant.

The recall now includes products that may have been imported to Ireland from the UK. Parents, guardians, and caregivers are urged not to feed these potentially contaminated batches to infants or young children. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has published details of the recalled products on its website, and recall notices are set to be displayed at points of sale.

While the FSAI emphasizes that there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the consumption of the implicated batches, it warns that symptoms from cereulide exposure can appear within five hours, typically lasting between six to 24 hours.

To address concerns, Nestlé encourages customers who have purchased the affected products to reach out via its online contact form, where they can submit a photo of the product along with the batch code for assistance. This proactive approach by Nestlé aims to ensure customer safety and maintain trust amid the situation.

As the company navigates this challenge, the emphasis on consumer awareness and health will hopefully reinforce safe practices in infant nutrition.
