The North Carolina Department of Transportation has announced a remarkable achievement for its intercity passenger rail service, NC By Train, which recorded the highest ridership since its inception. In October 2025, the trains welcomed 74,000 passengers, marking a 10% increase compared to the same month in 2024 and the largest count in the last 35 years.

Jason Orthner, director of the NCDOT Rail Division, expressed enthusiasm for the continued growth in passenger rail ridership across the state. He remarked, “We’re thrilled to see passenger rail ridership continue to grow across North Carolina as more people experience the convenience and benefits of train travel. Whether you are traveling for business, sporting events, school, to visit family, or just for fun, NC By Train is a comfortable, affordable, and stress-free way to get to your destination.”

The announcement also highlighted the service’s benefits, such as providing easy access to view the Carolina Panthers’ home games in Charlotte on November 30 and December 21. With the ongoing rise in ridership, NC By Train is solidifying its role as a vital transportation option for North Carolinians.
