NBL champion Jack McVeigh delivered a stunning performance, scoring a career-high 47 points to lead the Cairns Taipans to a thrilling 99-95 victory against the New Zealand Breakers at the Cairns Convention Centre. This remarkable achievement came just days after McVeigh welcomed his first child, making the win even more special for the 29-year-old.

McVeigh’s prolific scoring places him second in the all-time single-game scoring record for the Taipans, trailing only Martin Cattalini, who recorded 51 points in 2006. In addition to his scoring, McVeigh contributed eight rebounds and three assists, solidifying his position as a significant asset for the Taipans this season, now ranking second behind Bryce Cotton for the most points in a game this season.

Post-game, McVeigh dedicated his performance to his newborn, saying, “Shoutout to the baby at home, it’s been a fun week. That was cool to come out there and get that win.” His passionate display was complemented by teammate Sam Waardenburg, who added 16 points and ten rebounds, helping the Taipans secure their fifth win of the season.

The game was tightly contested, with Rob Baker bringing the Breakers within two points in the closing seconds after stealing the ball. However, McVeigh remained composed and hit two critical free throws to seal the victory. This win marks the Taipans’ second victory in three games, lifting them to an equal five wins alongside the Brisbane Bullets.

The match was also significant for the Taipans as it set their season scoring record, surpassing their previous best of 96 points against the Breakers in November. Despite McVeigh’s brilliance, the Breakers had standout performances as well, with Sam Mennenga leading the visitors with 24 points and Jackson-Cartwright contributing 12 points and 11 assists.

Cairns fans finally had something to celebrate as the team improved their home record to 2-9. McVeigh’s exceptional performance not only provided a thrilling game for supporters but also showcased the potential of the Taipans as they continue to strive for improvement in the NBL season. With McVeigh’s recent fatherhood likely serving as an emotional boost, this victory could signal brighter days ahead for the team.
