More than 100 residents remain stranded on Nayau Island in Lau, unable to return to Viti Levu after visiting for the Christmas and New Year holidays. District Officer Luke Karavaki expressed concerns that those affected have not been informed about the scheduling of vessels, leaving families uncertain about their return plans.

A vessel did make a stop at Nayau shortly after New Year’s, but unfortunately, it was already at full capacity and could not accommodate everyone waiting to travel back. Karavaki stated that the next possible sailing might not occur until the end of the month, which is causing complications for families preparing for the upcoming school term and for those employed on Viti Levu who need to return to work soon.

Residents are appealing to the government for immediate assistance to resolve the situation. Attempts to gather more information from shipping operators revealed that there is currently no confirmed sailing schedule for the island. Additionally, questions regarding this issue have been directed to the Minister for Transport.

Despite the difficulties faced by the residents, their calls for action may prompt a quicker response from authorities to alleviate their plight. The community’s resilience and unity during this challenging time highlight their hope for a swift resolution.
