Navua hit-and-run: Parents seek answers after 10-year-old boy struck by car

The parents of 10-year-old Joji Caudre are desperately seeking answers more than two months after their son was involved in a hit-and-run accident near their home in Rovadravu, Navua. On September 16, shortly after Joji exited a school bus, he was struck by a grey Toyota Aqua around 3:45 PM. His mother, Atonina Lebakaumata, witnessed the incident and described how the vehicle hit Joji, carried him on the hood, and then drove off, leaving him injured on the road.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly provided the registration number of the vehicle and identified the driver as a woman known within the community. Joji suffered severe facial injuries, including deep cuts to his face and nose, as well as trauma around his eyes, which required medical attention that included immobilizing his neck. After receiving initial treatment at Navua Hospital, he was transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for further care.

Despite a police report filed immediately after the incident, progress has been slow, and Mrs. Lebakaumata expressed concern that the case might be overlooked. She highlighted that she relayed eyewitness accounts to the police but was informed that the suspect was not reachable at that time. The last update from law enforcement came on September 19, leading Mrs. Lebakaumata to fear the case has “been swept under the rug.”

Ana Naisoro, the police spokesperson, confirmed the report’s filing and stated that witness statements were recorded. However, she noted that no one saw the vehicle’s registration number at the scene. A similar vehicle was located, and its owner was questioned, but her alibi, confirmed by her workplace manager, suggested she was not present at the time of the accident.

The police have assured that updates will be provided promptly, as directed by the Commissioner of Police. This incident is part of a broader concern in the community regarding hit-and-run cases and the necessity for thorough investigations. Recent similar cases, such as the tragedies involving Jonathan Lui and Jovilisi Katonibau, highlight the urgent need for accountability and justice in incidents of vehicular accidents that have left families grappling with loss and unanswered questions.

The community hopes that through continued perseverance and advocacy, families affected by such tragedies will eventually find peace and resolution. Law enforcement’s diligent efforts to ensure safety on the roads are crucial for regaining the trust of the public in addressing these distressing situations.
