The National Fire Authority (NFA) of Fiji is emphasizing the critical importance of fire safety following a catastrophic fire that consumed a double-storey home on Matana Street in Nakasi, Nausori. Acting CEO Joel Israel reported that a dedicated team of 13 firefighters battled the fierce flames throughout the night, with the fire finally being extinguished at 11:04 PM on Sunday. Tragically, the home, which was occupied by six individuals, has been classified as a total loss.

This unfortunate incident highlights how quickly fires can escalate and serves as a poignant reminder for households to prioritize fire safety measures. Mr. Israel advised the community that simple preventative steps can significantly enhance the safety of residents. He urged citizens to regularly inspect electrical wiring, remove flammable materials from around heat sources, ensure that smoke alarms are installed and routinely tested, and establish clear evacuation plans.

In light of this event, the NFA has launched a thorough investigation to uncover the cause of the fire. Through increased awareness and education regarding fire safety protocols, the NFA is dedicated to preventing future tragedies and safeguarding families across Fiji. The organization’s proactive approach aims to foster a culture of safety, ensuring that communities are better prepared to tackle fire emergencies.
