After a three-year break, Naiyala High School (NHS) has made a remarkable return to the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) competition, showcasing their talents with a series of notable victories from both their under-15 and under-17 teams. The school’s resurgence was emphasized by the under-17 team securing a narrow 6-0 win against Ratu Simione Matanitobua College, following an earlier 10-4 triumph by the under-15 team against the same rival.

NHS’s return to competitive play is particularly significant considering it was compelled to withdraw from the previous two to three seasons due to financial constraints. Siaki Baba, the coach of the under-17 team, highlighted that NHS is a smaller school with fewer resources compared to its larger competitors, which contributed to their previous absence from the league. However, buoyed by recent academic successes, including a commendable 100% pass rate among their year 13 students in last year’s external examinations, the school has reinvigorated its community spirit and fielded two teams this year.

Coach Baba expressed that although the primary aim is to achieve victory, it is equally important for the players to gain valuable experience and exposure. He stated, “Our goal is not just to compete, but to win and expose these boys to the expected level of competition. We are also aware that there are scouts around watching these young boys who are playing every weekend. If there are some scouts here, at least some of our boys can get scouted.”

Despite the successes on the field, Coach Baba admitted that there are areas needing improvement, particularly in tackling and technical skills. He noted, “The first half was tough, and we need to focus on improving our tackling and technical approach to be more competitive,” acknowledging the challenges posed by the building of a team with smaller players.

Baba also reached out for support from the greater Naiyala community and alumni, emphasizing the need for financial assistance and food provisions for the players during competitions. He appealed, “We need your support in terms of finance and food, especially for the boys’ lunches.”

The return of Naiyala High School to the rugby league not only highlights resilience in the face of challenges but also amplifies the hope and potential of young athletes in the region.
