Emergency restoration efforts at the Nailawa crossing in Tailevu have successfully concluded, reestablishing access for hundreds of residents after the approach was swept away during heavy rains earlier this month. This development comes in response to concerns raised to Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau regarding the struggles faced by villagers who had to navigate through waist-deep water for several days.
Ro Filipe advised that progress has been made along the Dawasamu corridor, urging the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to conduct thorough inspections and repairs from QVS to Dawasamu. His emphasis was on ensuring that repairs were conducted properly and that connections to Kings Road were reliable. Ongoing assessments and reinforcement measures are being prioritized to prevent future incidents.
The FRA mobilized emergency teams swiftly after the approach succumbed to escalating floodwaters. In a statement, the authority confirmed that the restoration efforts began immediately for the Nailawa crossing, with a dedicated team focused on restoring safe access for commuters.
With the completion of these emergency works, the FRA announced that the crossing is now open and safe for use. Villagers expressed their relief at regaining access to vital routes, including highways, schools, workplaces, and essential services, following several days of inconvenience.
This restoration not only highlights the resilience and determination of the local community but also reflects the responsive actions taken by government authorities to address critical infrastructure challenges. The reopening of the crossing is a positive step towards normalcy for those affected by the recent adverse weather conditions.
