Police are currently investigating a tragic road incident that occurred in Nadi, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old student early yesterday morning after he was struck by a vehicle. Authorities allege that the teenager was intoxicated and had fallen asleep along the roadside when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.

Emergency services rushed the victim to Nadi Hospital; however, he later succumbed to his injuries. The tragic event has sparked a call for heightened awareness concerning road safety, especially among young individuals who may consume alcohol.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, who oversees traffic control for the Fiji Police Force, emphasized the importance of avoiding walking along busy roadways while under the influence. “When you are intoxicated, please avoid walking along a busy road. You will only put yourself and other road users at risk,” SSP Divuana stated, highlighting the potential dangers.

As the investigation continues, the driver involved remains in police custody. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the serious repercussions that can arise from impaired judgment. Authorities hope that by raising awareness, similar tragic incidents can be avoided in the future.
