Former Fiji 7s captain and Olympic gold medalist Jerry Tuwai has lauded the Nadi Junior Rugby Festival, emphasizing its role as a premier development platform in the region as the two-day event draws to a close. The festival, which hosted teams from Fiji, Tuvalu, and Nauru across ages ranging from under-8 to under-18, has provided a significant opportunity for hundreds of young athletes to engage in structured competition and experience international play for the first time.
Tuwai believes that the positive effects of the tournament extend well beyond the games themselves. “I think that World Rugby, Oceania Rugby, Fiji Rugby and all the unions that take part here… this is one of the best rugby festivals that we have right now,” he stated, highlighting the collaborative efforts that enhance the event’s impact.
He pointed out that the real strength of the festival lies in the rugby values being imparted to participants, which he believes are essential for shaping futures both on and off the field. “It’s not just about rugby, it’s about sharing the values of rugby here today. This is where dreams are moulded. I started with small kites and everything,” Tuwai remarked, reflecting on his own journey.
Moreover, Tuwai underscored the festival’s significance at a regional level, suggesting that the increased participation of Pacific nations will contribute to raising the standards of rugby across Oceania. “What Oceania Rugby is doing right now will help not just Fiji Rugby but all the unions here today like Nauru, Tuvalu and clubs here in Fiji,” he affirmed.
As the Nadi Junior Rugby Festival comes to a close this afternoon, it stands as a testament to the power of sports in fostering community spirit and nurturing young talent throughout the region.
