The newly inaugurated Nabouwalu Passenger Services Terminal marks a significant step forward in upgrading transportation infrastructure, greatly benefiting rural and maritime communities. The terminal is designed to enhance safety, comfort, and dignity for the numerous passengers relying on Nabouwalu as their main transport hub.

Speaking at the terminal’s opening, Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, noted that passengers had long had to endure lengthy waits without sufficient shelter and facilities. The completion of the $2 million terminal is set to change that dynamic. Nalumisa emphasized that this project aligns with a broader vision to develop Nabouwalu Township and improve economic opportunities within Bua Province, asserting that rural communities deserve equal access to services compared to those in urban areas.

The new terminal will also serve local entrepreneurs, featuring three food kiosks, a handicraft shop, and a hair salon—all operated by residents of Bua. Nalumisa stated that this initiative will help create a vibrant town center that boosts job creation, attracts investment, and supports the overall growth of the Bua community. He highlighted, “When the community grows, families grow. When families grow, Fiji grows.” Additionally, a police post and modern facilities will instill greater confidence in travelers, allowing them to embark on their journeys with assurance.

As the construction phase wraps up, Nalumisa shared the next steps for the area’s development. The foreshore lease adjacent to the terminal is currently under review by the Department of Lands, with a public advertisement period initiated to address potential objections before lease issuance.

Once obtained, necessary surveys and Environmental Impact Assessments will be conducted with qualified consultants and contractors for engineering and backfilling tasks. The second phase of the project will include the construction of a covered boardwalk extending approximately 200 meters, directly linking the new terminal to the jetty, thereby improving the travel experience, especially during adverse weather. This additional phase is anticipated to require an investment of around $1.5 million, with a full appraisal aligned with current market conditions.

This new terminal stands as a beacon of progress in transportation infrastructure, promoting economic uplift and fostering community growth in Bua Province. The commitment to improving facilities not only enhances transit experience but also enhances the overall quality of life for residents and travelers alike.
