Myles McLaughlin Poised to Break Derrick Henry’s High School Rushing Record

The remarkable journey of Myles McLaughlin, a senior at Knox Community High School in Indiana, is capturing the attention of football enthusiasts as he edges closer to rewriting a piece of high school sports history. With an astonishing tally of 71 touchdowns and 4,768 rushing yards this season alone, McLaughlin is just 365 yards shy of matching the legendary Derrick Henry’s high school rushing record of 12,124 yards.

Despite these impressive milestones, McLaughlin has faced an uphill battle in gaining the necessary recruiting recognition. Up until recently, major recruiting platforms like 247Sports and Rivals had largely overlooked his potential. It was only after a standout performance that he received a star ranking, which he hopes will inspire others and validate his efforts.

McLaughlin’s surfacing talent has made his senior season feel almost surreal. Although he primarily plays quarterback for a small school with under 1,000 students, his 5’10”, 190-pound frame is suited for a running back. Transitioning to quarterback in his sophomore year, he quickly showcased his talents, running for 2,830 yards and 42 touchdowns during his junior year, setting the stage for his record-breaking senior performance.

His numbers have been staggering; he has logged over 400 rushing yards in five games and averages almost 11 yards per carry. At one point, he even scored ten touchdowns in a single game against Culver Academies—a feat he refers to as a dream come true. Additionally, McLaughlin’s versatility extends to defense, where he plays free safety and has racked up eight interceptions this season.

Famous athletes are starting to notice McLaughlin’s achievements. NFL star Rob Gronkowski praised his remarkable speed and agility, while Derrick Henry himself has publicly encouraged McLaughlin to pursue his record, stating, “Records are meant to be broken,” and even sending a motivational message to him.

As McLaughlin continues to break state and national records, the recruiting scene is finally heating up. Recently, he received scholarship offers from Ball State and Murray State, signaling a shift in interest from Division I programs. With these developments, McLaughlin expressed gratitude for the attention and hopes to land at a college that feels like home.

Despite the surge in recruiting buzz, McLaughlin’s focus remains on his team and the season at hand. He dreams of leading Knox Community to its first-ever state championship, a goal that resonates deeply with his classmates. As he approaches a critical playoff game against Bishop Luers, he exemplifies both the drive and humility expected of a true athlete.

The legacy of his senior season could very well culminate in football history, paving the way for greater recognition in the sport. Myles McLaughlin stands at the brink of not just chasing records but creating a narrative of determination and perseverance that will inspire young athletes for generations to come.
