MTA Offers Free OMNY Cards Ahead of MetroCard Sunset

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is making significant strides toward the full implementation of its contactless payment system, OMNY, as it prepares to phase out the MetroCard. In an effort to facilitate this transition, the MTA has announced that New Yorkers can obtain a free OMNY card at select subway stations throughout the city beginning Tuesday, November 18.

This promotion comes in anticipation of the final day for MetroCard sales on December 31. The first 400 commuters who visit MTA customer service centers across the five boroughs will be able to exchange their MetroCard balances for a complimentary OMNY card. Typically, the cost of an OMNY card varies between $1 and $5, making this an attractive offer for riders looking to switch to the newer system.

The timing of this giveaway is also strategic, coinciding with an impending bus and subway fare increase set for January, which will raise the current fare from $2.90 to $3.

MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara emphasized the importance of this transition, stating, “As we prepare to say goodbye to the MetroCard, we want to make sure customers are aware of all the resources available at our growing number of customer service centers across the subway system.” She encouraged riders to take advantage of the fee-free OMNY card exchange.

It is important to note that the complimentary OMNY cards will not come pre-loaded with trip value. To make the transition as seamless as possible, riders can exchange their MetroCards across various stations, including:

– **The Bronx**: 161 St-Yankee Stadium, Fordham Rd., Parkchester
– **Brooklyn**: Atlantic Ave.-Barclays Center, Coney Island-Stillwell Ave., Myrtle-Wyckoff Ave.
– **Manhattan**: 34 St-Penn Station, 125 St., 168 St., Fulton St., Grand Central-42nd St., Times Square-42nd St.
– **Queens**: Flushing-Main St., Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave., Sutphin Blvd.-Archer Ave.-JFK Airport
– **Staten Island**: St. George Staten Island Railway (operating Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.)

In addition to promoting the new OMNY cards, the MTA reassured commuters that MetroCards will remain valid until 2026, although the exact final acceptance date is yet to be determined. Remaining balances on MetroCards can be transferred or reimbursed for up to two years after the card’s expiration.

As New Yorkers embrace the future of transit payments with OMNY, this initiative not only facilitates a smoother transition but also enhances the overall travel experience for millions of riders who rely on public transportation every day.
