A recent LinkedIn study reveals that approximately 80% of workers feel unprepared for the impending job market in 2026. With the job landscape marked by significant challenges, this sense of unpreparedness comes at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform the recruitment process fundamentally.

Janine Chamberlin, the U.K. country manager for LinkedIn, provided insights during an interview with CNBC Make It, highlighting the anticipated impact of AI in hiring. She projects that by 2026, AI will have become integral to recruitment, streamlining processes that have long been time-consuming and labor-intensive. “Last year was the year of experimentation, and by 2026, we expect more widespread adoption of AI tools, especially in hiring,” Chamberlin stated.

The research indicates that AI is already proving helpful for recruiters in managing large volumes of job applications. By automating the screening of resumes and cover letters, AI can identify candidates with specific skills that might otherwise be overlooked in manual searches. Chamberlin cited that 60% of recruiters reported discovering “hidden gem” talents through AI, underscoring its potential to enhance the recruitment process.

The job market has faced immense pressure, characterized by widespread layoffs and fierce competition for available positions. According to data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, over 1 million job cuts were reported in the U.S. in 2025, marking the highest levels since the pandemic. Consequently, the number of applications for each position has surged, with LinkedIn’s findings revealing that applications per open role have doubled since spring 2022.

This increase in application volume creates an overwhelming cycle for both job seekers and recruiters. Chamberlin explained that candidates are applying to numerous positions, while companies struggle to sift through myriad applications quickly enough to find the right fit. This lag often leads to heightened anxiety among job seekers, who may not hear back promptly, prompting them to further inundate the market with applications.

Chamberlin emphasizes that this scenario complicates the job search landscape, suggesting that AI may offer a much-needed solution. According to LinkedIn’s research, 93% of recruiters intend to expand their use of AI by 2026, signaling a significant shift towards relying on technology to enhance recruitment efficiency.
