Moscow is experiencing unprecedented winter weather as a major snowstorm has resulted in back-to-back daily snowfall records. On Wednesday, the city recorded approximately 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) of snow, followed by an additional 13 millimeters of precipitation overnight, translating to roughly 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) of fresh snowfall. As a result, some areas in Moscow now have a snow cover reaching up to 65 centimeters (2.13 feet), with expectations of an extra 2 to 3 centimeters (0.79-1.18 inches) accumulating by the end of Thursday.
Meteorologist Tatyana Pozdnyakova from Meteonovosti reports that this severe weather is expected to be followed by a significant cold snap, anticipated to begin at the end of the week. Starting Friday night, temperatures are predicted to drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit), with daytime highs struggling to reach minus 13 degrees Celsius (8 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least the following several days.
As the city grapples with travel disruptions caused by the heavy snowfall, residents can prepare for a stark shift in conditions as winter’s grasp firmly takes hold. Despite the challenges posed by the snow and impending cold, this winter storm serves as a reminder of nature’s power and beauty, with hopes that the snow will also bring a picturesque landscape to Moscow, adding to its charm during the winter season.
