Moana Pasifika has announced the postponement of plans to host a Super Rugby match in Tonga this year due to the inability to secure necessary sponsorship. In a statement, the club expressed their disappointment, stating that bringing a game to Tonga had been a top priority and that they explored every possible avenue to make it happen.
Debbie Sorensen, CEO of Moana Pasifika, conveyed the heartbreak felt by the team, fans, and families in Tonga. Despite this setback, she emphasized the club’s commitment to growing the sport in the region and expressed hope for future opportunities to bring world-class rugby to Tonga and other Pacific nations.
Aisea Aholelei, CEO of the Tonga Rugby Union, acknowledged the challenges faced by both organizations. He highlighted that hosting matches in Tonga is often a financial burden unless substantial sponsorship is secured. Aholelei expressed his desire to support the Moana Pasifika team and collaborate on strategies to strengthen the club in the future.
Moana Pasifika is actively seeking an alternative venue for the planned match and will provide updates as arrangements are confirmed. The club remains optimistic about contributing to rugby in the Pacific and hopes to overcome the current challenges in the near future, promoting a positive outlook for the sport in the region.
