Mito Pereira has announced his retirement from professional golf at the age of 30. The Chilean golfer shared that he had been “thoughtfully considering” this decision for quite some time and now looks forward to focusing on his personal life back in his homeland.
Pereira turned professional in 2015 after honing his skills at Texas Tech University. He made his mark on the PGA Tour in 2021, boasting three wins on the Korn Ferry Tour and proudly representing Chile at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he finished just one stroke away from a bronze medal playoff.
One of the defining moments of Pereira’s career occurred at the 2022 PGA Championship, where he led after 71 holes but suffered a double-bogey on the final hole, missing out on the playoff by one stroke. This was only his second appearance in a major championship.
In 2023, he joined LIV Golf but faced challenges, finishing 51st in the standings and being relegated from the tour.
In his heartfelt retirement announcement, Pereira reflected on the impact golf has had on his life. He expressed gratitude for the experiences it provided, allowing him to meet incredible people, explore new cultures, and achieve many milestones. He emphasized a desire to step away from the constant travel associated with professional sports and to dedicate time to his family and life in Chile.
Pereira shared, “Golf played a fundamental role in my life. It allowed me to grow both personally and professionally… I now begin a new chapter feeling happy, motivated, and at peace.” His retirement is not only a conclusion to a significant chapter but also marks the beginning of new opportunities. With a rich history in the sport, including his achievements on the Korn Ferry Tour, LIV Golf, and international competitions, Pereira leaves behind a legacy that transcends the game.
As he transitions to this new phase of life, he expressed warmth and appreciation for his family, friends, team, sponsors, and the loyal fans who supported him throughout his journey. Pereira’s plans for the future may be centered on family and personal growth, but he leaves a lasting imprint on the world of golf that will not be forgotten. His story embodies resilience and the pursuit of happiness, serving as an inspiration for many.
