After just one season with the Missouri Tigers, defensive end Nathan Johnson is set to re-enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Reports from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch indicate that Johnson has been taken off the Tigers’ online roster and is expected to officially enter the portal when it opens on January 2. Standing at 6 feet 6 inches and weighing 230 pounds, Johnson came to Columbia last offseason after a successful two-year stint at Appalachian State.

During his time with the Mountaineers, Johnson was a standout player, amassing 77 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks during his freshman and sophomore years. His impressive performance led him to become an On3 True Freshman All-American in 2023, where he excelled with 7.5 sacks, helping to anchor App State’s defensive line. On3’s Charles Power noted Johnson’s dynamic abilities, highlighting his potential as one of the best true freshmen in Group of 5 programs.

Despite the promise he showed prior to joining Missouri, Johnson’s time with the Tigers did not meet expectations. He participated in nine games but managed to record only six tackles while primarily playing behind All-SEC defensive end Zion Young. With one year of eligibility remaining, Johnson will now seek a new opportunity through the transfer portal.

Johnson isn’t the only player exiting Missouri, which has seen multiple departures this offseason. Alongside him, reserve offensive lineman Jaylen Early and running back Tavorus Jones have also opted to transfer, bringing the total number of players leaving the program to 18. This includes three running backs seeking new playing time, as true freshmen Marquise Davis and Brendon Haygood have previously announced similar intentions. The Tigers are expected to retain All-American running back Ahmad Hardy and backup Jamal Roberts, who had a strong season with over 750 rushing yards.

Furthermore, Missouri will need to replace key contributors in the wider receiver positions, losing starters Josh Manning and Marquis Johnson, as well as quarterback Beau Pribula. Notably, four players from the offensive line have also declared their intention to pursue free agency.

As the Tigers navigate these changes, they will be focusing on building a competitive roster for the upcoming season, aiming to replenish key positions and strengthen their overall team dynamic.
