Contestants of the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant (MPIP) visited Sabeto Village on Monday as part of their cultural immersion program in Fiji, aimed at deepening their understanding of the region’s rich traditions. Representatives from American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Tonga were warmly welcomed by the village elders of the Vanua o Betoraurau, with the ceremony led by na Momo Levu na Tui Sabeto.
This visit kicked off a morning focused on absorbing local customs and exploring the cultural significance of Sabeto. The contestants engaged in storytelling sessions and participated in various practices that are integral to the village’s way of life. Elders took the opportunity to share insights about Sabeto’s history, kinship structures, and the values that unite the community.
The visit emphasizes the pageant’s dedication to promoting Pacific identity and fostering cultural awareness. Contestants expressed admiration for the parallels they observed between Fijian customs and those from their own cultures, highlighting the visit as a valuable means to enhance regional understanding and unity.
Interactions between the contestants and local villagers, including women’s groups and youth, enriched the experience as they shared knowledge about their daily lives and cultural responsibilities.
The cultural immersion program will continue throughout the week, with contestants set to participate in various community activities, public events, and additional cultural briefings, all leading up to the main pageant events. This initiative not only cherishes the unique heritage of the Pacific islands but also paves the way for mutual understanding and appreciation amongst the diverse cultures represented.
