Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl is generating considerable excitement ahead of the character’s first solo film, set to hit theaters on June 26. The movie marks a significant addition to the new interconnected DC Universe (DCU), following the successful launch of the 2025 Superman film. More than five months before its release, the film has already garnered positive attention, notably from acclaimed comic writer Tom King.

King, who has extensive experience with the Supergirl character, expressed his admiration for Alcock’s performance during an appearance on the Uncensored Nerds podcast. He stated that Alcock is the “absolute embodiment” of Supergirl, referencing her portrayal as aligning with both the original vision of the character created by Otto Binder and the contemporary interpretations he has worked on. King’s praise adds weight to the anticipation surrounding the film, particularly given his involvement in the critically acclaimed comic series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which serves as a direct inspiration for the movie.

The film has undergone test screenings recently, during which Alcock reportedly impressed audiences with her performance. Insider Daniel Richtman has also indicated that early reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive.

Supergirl will initiate DC Studios’ theatrical season, delivering a storyline that sees Kara Zor-El embarking on a revenge journey across the stars, following in the footsteps of her cousin Superman. In addition to Alcock, the film features a strong supporting cast, including Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, and Jason Momoa.

Fans are particularly keen on seeing Alcock’s interpretation of the character, especially given Supergirl’s long absence from the big screen, her last leading role occurring in 1984. The buzz around the film is further heightened by Alcock’s earlier appearances as Supergirl, which have been well-received, including a cameo in James Gunn’s Superman and a brief appearance in Peacemaker.

With director Craig Gillespie, known for “I, Tonya,” leading the project and a promising script from Ana Nogueira, expectations are mounting. Although Nogueira may not yet be a household name, her upcoming projects, including a Wonder Woman movie script and a Teen Titans project, suggest that the studio is placing significant confidence in her writing abilities.

The enthusiastic response surrounding Supergirl highlights a shared hope among fans that the film will live up to the considerable anticipation. With a combination of fresh talent, strong material, and a beloved character, there is reason for optimism as the release date approaches.
