A light dusting of snow is anticipated Friday evening into the night, with accumulations reaching up to half an inch in certain areas of Maryland and Virginia. However, the more pressing concern will be the dangerously cold temperatures that are set to follow.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Watch that will remain in place from late Friday night through Sunday morning. Wind chills are projected to dip between 0 and 15 degrees below zero in Washington, D.C., much of Maryland, and parts of northern and western Virginia, extending into eastern West Virginia. On Saturday, wind chills are expected to stay at or below zero for an extended period due to strong, persistent winds combined with frigid temperatures.
These extreme conditions increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, prompting the NWS to urge the public to take necessary precautions. If venturing outdoors is unavoidable, it is crucial to dress in layers and to cover all exposed skin, particularly the face, hands, and head. Pet owners are advised to keep pets indoors whenever possible and to ensure that any outdoor animals have access to a warm, dry shelter along with food and unfrozen water. Additionally, it is recommended to check in on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors during this severe weather. When using space heaters, safety measures should be adhered to, and it’s imperative to avoid running generators or grills indoors.
The community’s proactive approach during this extreme weather will be essential in maintaining safety and well-being.
