Michigan Wolverines have managed to retain standout quarterback Bryce Underwood for his sophomore season, but heading into 2026, the team faces significant challenges in their quarterback depth. The Wolverines experienced notable transfers with Jadyn Davis, Mikey Keene, and Davis Warren all leaving for the transfer portal, alongside Jake Garcia, who has exhausted his eligibility. Consequently, Michigan finds itself with an inexperienced quarterback lineup, consisting primarily of freshmen Brady Smigiel and Tommy Carr, along with redshirt freshman Chase Herbsreit.

To bolster their roster, Michigan has added Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi from Colorado State, a seasoned quarterback who can support Underwood. However, the Wolverines appear to be pursuing further options in the transfer portal, gaining traction in the recruitment of LSU’s Colin Hurley.

Hurley, who reclassified and enrolled at LSU at the age of 16, has yet to see game action as he redshirted last season. With three years of eligibility remaining, joining Michigan would provide him an opportunity to learn from offensive experts like Jason Beck and Koy Detmer Jr. Hurley was once a highly regarded four-star prospect, with interests from top-tier programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. As a young player, he showcased impressive arm talent and a solid foundation of mechanics, leading his Florida high school team to a state championship at just 14 years old.

According to scouting reports, Hurley has demonstrated the ability to manage plays efficiently, but he needs to refine his accuracy and decision-making. Michigan’s offensive system, which has a strong spread component, could complement his background, making the transition smoother as he acclimates to the collegiate level.

Although it’s unlikely Hurley will see significant action early on, especially with Underwood expected to be the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, this move could prove strategic for Michigan looking ahead. In the long term, if Underwood departs the program after the 2027 season, Hurley could compete for the starting position, thus enhancing the Wolverines’ QB depth and stability in the coming years. This approach not only strengthens the immediate roster but also lays the groundwork for a promising future at the quarterback position.
