Netflix has announced the development of a compelling drama series centered around a high school hockey team from Minnesota, with acclaimed actress Michelle Monaghan set to take a leading role. The untitled series has been granted an eight-episode order and is being produced by creator Nick Naveda under the banner of Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment. The show’s direction will be led by Trey Edward Shults, who will helm the first two episodes, while Bridget Bedard, known for her work on “Love Life” and “Ramy,” will serve as the showrunner.

Scheduled to unfold in the fictional town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, the series tells a poignant story about resilience and community. The town’s high school hockey team has a storied history, consistently producing state champions and NHL talent under the guidance of the iconic Coach ‘Sully’ Sullivan. However, tragedy strikes when a devastating bus accident claims the lives of several players, including Sully himself. In the aftermath, it falls upon Harper Sullivan (played by Monaghan), the coach’s widow, to step in and lead a new team comprised of young men grappling with loss. The narrative promises a heartfelt journey as the underdogs strive to unify their town, transform their grief into strength, and rediscover a sense of purpose through the sport.

Shawn Levy emphasized the emotional depth of the series, stating, “This show has long been a 21 Laps favorite…Nick and Bridget have built a world and ensemble of characters that are rooted in authenticity and huge heart…we cannot wait to bring this show to a global audience.”

Naveda also reflected on the project’s significance to him, expressing, “I’ve carried South Dorothy and its people in my heart for as long as I can remember. To finally bring that world to life is nothing short of a dream come true.”

The series is expected to resonate with viewers, offering not only thrilling sports action but also rich, human stories that underscore the power of community and healing. Monaghan, who recently starred in HBO’s “The White Lotus,” continues to build her impressive portfolio with this latest endeavor, further showcasing her versatile talent in a deeply emotional narrative.
