Mexico’s national football coach, Javier Aguirre, has assured fans of their safety during the upcoming friendly match against Iceland in Queretaro this Wednesday, despite recent security concerns following the killing of a prominent cartel leader. Aguirre stated that the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has guaranteed that all attendees will be safe at the Estadio Corregidora.

The situation in the country escalated dramatically after the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación. This incident prompted an immediate response from cartel members, including roadblocks and vehicle burnings across nearly a dozen states, which caused the postponement of several Liga MX matches involving Queretaro, Juarez FC, and Chivas vs. America.

Despite these alarming events, Aguirre expressed confidence, saying, “We’re here. We’re very calm, relaxed, training, we talk about sports.” He urged fans to remain reassured as preparations for the game continue. The match is expected to draw a crowd of over 30,000, with all tickets sold out.

Looking ahead, Aguirre is hopeful for a friendly against Portugal in Mexico City on March 28, although their federation is currently assessing the situation. The Portuguese federation has indicated they are closely monitoring developments in Mexico given the current delicate security climate.

As preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, FIFA has requested reports from Mexico regarding its security measures. In response to concerns, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed unwavering confidence in Mexico’s readiness for the tournament, praising local authorities and their commitment to maintaining order and security. He acknowledged that issues can arise anywhere in the world, but he emphasized the importance of established systems to address these challenges.

The international football community is rallying around Mexico, underscoring the country’s rich soccer heritage and the collective resolve to ensure a safe and successful sporting environment as they approach the World Cup.
