The disastrous flooding and landslides were triggered by a tropical depression that hit regions along the Gulf Coast and central states, causing rivers to burst their banks after the area had already been saturated by months of rainfall.
President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that the severity of the rainstorm was unexpected, noting, “This intense rain was not expected to be of such magnitude.” Admiral Raymundo Morales, the Navy Secretary, explained that the flooding resulted from the convergence of warm and cold air masses over previously swollen rivers and mountains that had been weakened by the ongoing rainy season.
The impacts are widespread, with approximately 100,000 homes affected, particularly in the states of Hidalgo and Veracruz, which reported the highest fatalities—29 in Veracruz with 18 more unaccounted for, and 21 deaths alongside 43 missing in Hidalgo. The rain wreaked havoc on infrastructure too, damaging bridges and leaving streets covered in mud. Emergency responders have been depicted in videos wading through the deluged areas as they work to rescue stranded residents and deliver essential supplies.
In response to the unfolding tragedy, thousands of personnel have been deployed to assist in evacuation efforts and cleanup operations. Dealing with the aftermath, Sheinbaum is set to meet with the finance ministry to discuss plans for rebuilding the affected communities. As power has been restored to most towns that experienced outages, authorities are also focused on public health, particularly in preventing the spread of mosquito-borne viruses such as dengue, exacerbated by the stagnant water created by the flooding.
