Angry fans expressed their disappointment at Lionel Messi’s promotional tour event in India, leading to chaos at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. Thousands of passionate supporters had paid up to 12,000 rupees (approximately £100 or $133) to see the football star, but their excitement turned to frustration when Messi’s brief public appearance was limited to a walk around the pitch, obscured by a throng of officials and celebrities.

After about 20 minutes, Messi was whisked away by security, prompting unrest among some fans. Reports indicate that elements of the crowd reacted angrily, ripping up seats and throwing objects onto the pitch in their frustration. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock at the occurrences, stating she was “deeply disturbed” and announcing a formal inquiry into the incident. She extended her apologies to Messi and “sports lovers,” pledging a committee would investigate and propose measures to prevent future incidents.

A spokesperson for Messi clarifies that he adhered to his agreed time commitment for the event. For matters regarding the organization, they referred media inquiries to the comments made by Banerjee. Furthermore, a police official confirmed the arrest of the event’s “chief organiser,” although details were scarce. Authorities are also exploring ways to issue refunds to fans who purchased tickets for the event, which the All India Football Federation noted was a private occasion and not under their purview.

Messi is currently in India for his ‘GOAT tour,’ which includes promotional activities across several cities, including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. The tour highlighted his impact in the sport, starting with the unveiling of a massive 70-foot statue of him in Kolkata, assembled over 27 days by a dedicated team. Initially, fans filled the stadium, chanting and showing their affection through Messi-themed merchandise.

Despite the unfortunate turn of events, it remains clear that Messi continues to inspire legions of fans around the world, reaffirming his status as one of football’s all-time greats.
