Mentor Turned Opponent: Şengün Reflects on Splitter Ahead of Blazers Clash

Alperen Şengün is set to face the Portland Trail Blazers for the first time since Tiago Splitter took over as head coach. The Houston Rockets’ All-Star center has fond memories from the one season he shared with Splitter, who was part of Ime Udoka’s coaching staff during the 2023-24 season. Şengün was confident from the start that Splitter, an assistant who worked closely with him, would eventually ascend to a head coaching role.

Reflecting on their relationship, Şengün expressed his gratitude, stating, “He taught me a lot. He’s like a brother. I had a brother-ship with him.” This bond was nurtured during a pivotal time in Şengün’s career as he transitioned into his third NBA season.

After just one year on the Rockets’ staff, Splitter accepted the head coaching position at Paris Basketball in France’s top league, LNB Élite. This move came after the previous head coach, Tuomas Iisalo, was hired by the Memphis Grizzlies. Despite the geographic distance, Şengün maintained a close relationship with Splitter throughout his transition to Paris, always acknowledging his coach’s aspirations and potential.

As he prepares for tonight’s game, Şengün’s respect and appreciation for Splitter are evident, and their shared experiences could serve as motivation in their renewed journeys.
