Mental resilience is poised to be the key factor in enhancing the performance of the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s sevens team as they prepare for the upcoming tournaments in Singapore and Perth, part of the second leg of the HSBC Sevens Series. The squad, composed of both talented and seasoned rugby players, has the potential to electrify any match they play.
Head coach Osea Kolinisau emphasizes that mental resilience will distinguish champions from those who are merely skilled. To foster this quality, Kolinisau intentionally simulates high-pressure situations during training sessions. His approach focuses on pushing the players to their limits, ensuring they can perform effectively even when exhausted.
Kolinisau explained his training philosophy, stating, “We’re trying to push the boys, especially in training, getting them tired, fatigued, and then pushing them to do the hard stuff, especially defending when they’re really tired.” He noted that while many players can perform well under relaxed conditions, true champions are those who manage to maintain their focus and effectiveness in challenging moments.
The mental pressure on the team is already intensifying as they prepare to defend their title in Singapore, where they achieved victory against Kenya with a score of 21-12 last year. The upcoming competition is set to take place from January 31 to February 1, and there are high expectations for the team to continue their success.
This focus on mental fortitude could not only elevate individual performances but might also contribute to the overall strength and unity of the team, highlighting the significant role of psychological preparation in modern sports. The atmosphere leading into the competitions is charged with anticipation, and the squad appears ready to rise to the challenge.
